SEO with ChatGPT

ChatGPT is both a gift and a curse.

It can help you do subject matter research and optimize your existing data-heavy processes.

But at the same time, it can be all too easy to fall into the trap of “hiring ChatGPT as your new SEO manager”.

That’s why it’s important to know what you’re doing before you start delegating all your content and SEO tasks to ChatGPT. If you want to treat it like a manager, you need to become its director.

That involves understanding the underlying theory and demanding answers on how it thinks.

You don’t want a bot that makes random decisions and hallucinates – you want high-quality output after all.

How to use ChatGPT for SEO

That’s why I like to use ChatGPT as my research (input) and data assistant (data manipulation).

The best tactics I can recommend using ChatGPT for are:

  1. Ask ChatGPT to review the top-ranking pages for a keyword, and recommend improvements to your content.
  2. Pull big data and get valuable insights quickly, e.g. you can scrape all the info from a Google SERP with this marklet; just save this JS as a bookmark and click it whenever you’re on Google and want to pull all the search results (links + anchor text). Once you have that data, you can ask ChatGPT to give you insights regarding common themes and content focuses.

This 2nd point is especially useful when you combine it with other tactics, for example searching a competitors pages very quickly with the Google search: “site:exampledomain.com”. This search pulls all the pages from “exampledomain.com”, which doesn’t actually exist – but can be replaced with your competitor domains!

The Issue with Using ChatGPT for SEO

The main issue with ChatGPT is that it doesn’t follow the SEO process. It doesn’t know search volume or keyword difficulty. Even though I use it in my SEO workflow, I still need to do a lot of re-prompting based on the data from SEMRush and my other SEO tools.

Essentially, you need to make sure you understand what you’re doing – because it’s definitely not as simple as saying:

Create an effective SEO content plan that will generate lots of free traffic to my website.

At least not in 2025.

That’s why you need to learn the process and use ChatGPT to improve your processes.

Not completely replace them 👀
